Hypnosis Terms
Behavior Modification - Techniques to change an undesirable
behavior into a more desirable one, using the addition or removal of
positive or aversive stimuli and consequences.
Brainwashing - A method using mind control techniques in which
the subject is programmed to abandon his basic beliefs and principles,
which are replaced by those of his indoctrinator.
Condition - To make one accustomed to a new way of thinking and behaving. Hypnosis is often used as a tool in conditioning.
Eye-Fixation Induction - An induction technique in which the
subject is told to stare at an object, such as a spiral or pendulum.
Other popular eye-fixation techniques involve the use of the Hypnotists
eyes, a specific jewelry or accessory item (such as a watch or a
cigarette holder), and focus on a specific part of the ceiling or wall.
Hypnosis - A state that resembles sleep, in which the subject is
open to the suggestions of the Hypnotist. It is a trance-like state
that can either come naturally during such activities as reading and
watching television, or it can be induced by someone who is skilled in
bringing about a hypnotic state.
Hypnodrama/Imagery - Using all of the five senses in
experiencing a situation under hypnosis. This can be an experience the
subject has already encountered (as in regression) or a new situation
that the subject wants to experience either for fantasy purposes or to
resolve an inner conflict.
Induction - A technique that induces a person into a hypnotic
trance. Inductions can include eye-fixation, body relaxation,
visualization (guided imagination), and numerical countdowns.
Mind Control - The control of one’s thinking, behavior, or consciousness by an outside source.
Post-Hypnotic Suggestion - A suggestion given during hypnosis which will be acted on at some point(s) after the trance has been lifted.
Regression - Being taken back in time to an event of the past and re-experiencing it, physically, and emotionally.
Subconscious - The part of our mind that is concerned with our
bare, animal instincts and the operations of our organs. It is also the
place of imagination. We are not always aware of what happens in our
subconscious minds, because it is our conscious minds that register and
organize what we know.
Triggers - Sounds, images, smells, and tastes which bring about a certain response, memory, or emotion.
Visualization - The act of seeing something in the minds eye,
which can be used as part of an induction, a deepener, or within a
hypnosis fantasy
